Hokkaido Itineraries: Sample Routes for Every Season

Suggested Hokkaido itineraries for winter, summer, spring, and autumn. Day-by-day routes with transport, accommodation tips, and budget estimates.

Hokkaido rewards different itineraries depending on the season. A winter trip built around skiing, onsen, and the Snow Festival looks nothing like a summer journey through flower fields and national parks. The distances involved also require careful planning — the island is roughly the size of Austria, and trying to see everything in a single trip usually results in spending more time in transit than at destinations.

These suggested itineraries are designed around realistic travel times, tested transport connections, and logical geographic routing. Each can be adapted to your pace and interests.

Choose Your Season

Itinerary Duration Season Focus
Winter: Sapporo, Otaru & Niseko 7 days Dec–Mar Skiing, Snow Festival, onsen, food
Winter: Eastern Hokkaido & Drift Ice 7 days Jan–Mar Drift ice, cranes, wilderness, onsen
Summer: Furano, Biei & Central Hokkaido 5–7 days Jun–Sep Flower fields, hiking, cheese, cycling
Autumn: Foliage, Food & Onsen 5–7 days Sep–Nov Autumn colours, harvest food, hot springs

Planning Tips

  • Don’t overpack your itinerary. Hokkaido’s distances mean that adding one more destination often costs half a day in transit. Two or three base cities with day trips from each is more enjoyable than moving hotels every night.
  • Sapporo works as a hub. With train connections to Otaru (32 min), Asahikawa (85 min), and bus services to Niseko, Noboribetsu, and Furano, you can base in Sapporo and day-trip to many destinations without changing hotels.
  • Eastern Hokkaido requires commitment. Kushiro, Shiretoko, and Abashiri are 4+ hours from Sapporo. If you want to see eastern Hokkaido, dedicate at least 3–4 days to it rather than trying to squeeze it into a Sapporo-based trip.
  • Consider a rental car for anything beyond the Sapporo–Otaru–Hakodate corridor. Rural Hokkaido is best explored by car. Details in our car rental guide.
  • The JR Hokkaido Rail Pass pays for itself with 2–3 limited express journeys. Available through Klook.
